Stage5 Cycling Joins Forces with Cycling Fusion
On Thursday, October 21st, Tom Scotto (Stage5 Cycling) and Gene Nacey of Cycling Fusion signed papers to solidify a relationship that will be the catalyst for a new generation of cycling education and training, indoors and on the road.
A month earlier, Cycling Fusion, known for its cutting edge virtual riding and indoor power certification, purchased Heart Zones Cycling. Heart Zones Cycling is the training company created by world renowned educator and hall of fame triathlete, Sally Edwards. Now Cycling Fusion has acquired Stage5 Cycling to form what will be the most comprehensive indoor cycling, education and coaching company in existence.
Tom Scotto will take responsibility for 2 of Cycling Fusion’s 4 divisions. Tom will lead the education and certification division that will bring forth a complete training and certification system for indoor cycling instructors and riders alike. This will include virtual cycling and training, instructor workshops, continuing education, and a full suite of programs for health clubs and cycling studios.
Tom will also head the coaching and sports division that will keep the Stage5 Cycling name, offering a complete set of services for cyclists training on all levels. This includes personal and small group coaching, bike fitting, fitness testing and performance nutrition. In addition, Tom will act as the director sportif for Stage5 Cycling’s bike clubs and teams. Currently, 2 cycling clubs and teams are already preparing for the 2011 season in both Pittsburgh and Boston with additional cities planned in the upcoming months.
Amongst all of the activity involved in starting this new cycling revolution, everyone from Cycling Fusion, Heart Zones and Stage5 Cycling remain very excited about what we are building together and what this will mean to the indoor cycling and outdoor cycling communities alike.
What does this mean for you?
If you are a current Stage5 Cycling instructor or host city, you are certainly wondering how this will affect what you have been building with us. Rest assured, we will continue to honor your tremendous commitment to us as we bring you the very best in training and coaching. We will be putting together the specifics over the next few weeks as we prepare for our kick-off training event in Colorado this December. Without a doubt, more exciting news will continue to flow to you as it comes in.
Thank you for your belief in the standards and change Stage5 Cycling has begun. We look forward to having you with us as we complete our vision and mission.

They Were In Shock – The Adventures of Creating an Indoor Cycling Certification
You don’t want to continually warn people how hard your certification testing is because it always sounds like you’re just trying to hype things up. That was never our intention. We just wanted to give folks a heads-up that this may not be what they’ve experienced in the past. Despite the warnings and the strong recommendation to study and practice before taking the written and practical exams, some have hastily attempted the certification and failed. They were in shock! “How could I fail, both the written AND practical. I’ve been teaching at multiple health clubs for X amount of years. You must have made a mistake”.
Unfortunately, there was no mistake.
Who’s to Blame?
Is the written test too hard? No. Is expecting an instructor to be able to demonstrate their ability to teach too much to require? Absolutely not. So why would someone who has been teaching indoor cycling for years (some previously holding more than one indoor cycling certification) fail the Stage5 Cycling certification? Who is to blame?
It is NOT the instructors fault!
The blame falls on indoor cycling companies and health clubs. Indoor cycling companies have provided inadequate training and “certification” from the start and health clubs have allowed it to enter their facilities.
“Certification”
Historically, indoor cycling certifications have never been legitimate certifications. Participants attend a 1-day “orientation” and are awarded their certification because of their attendance. No exams, written or practical are required. Instructors are then considered qualified to teach 20 to 30+ people in a group fitness environment after just one day of training. There would be a shred of merit to the process if instructors were required to at least hold a personal trainer or group fitness certification. Then the indoor cycling certification would be considered an “add-on” to their existing knowledge and experience base. This is not the case. Anyone can take an indoor cycling certification workshop and then be considered a certified instructor.
Workshop Adventures
Because of the expectation that has been created over the years, a number of people get confused when they sign-up for our 2-day workshop. They automatically assume the workshop provides them with their certification. It takes them a few moments to wrap their mind around the concept that they will still have to take a comprehensive written and practical exam – on a separate date. The encouraging part is that instructors get it. Once you explain the value and the standard we are trying to uphold, they get excited and express that this is what they always wanted.
Resetting Expectations
Our goal is to recapture the value, expertise and pride in being a indoor cycling instructor. This can only happen if people obtain a legitimate certification. The expectation needs to be reset. For example, one expects to study, take workshops and sit for a challenging exam in order to become a personal trainer. This is the expectation that the industry has created. Take a look at the hours, cost and requirements of some popular health and fitness certifications:

Who Will Stop the Maddness?
It should come as no surprise why indoor cycling instructors are not seen as equals to other certified fitness professionals. Personal trainers and certified cycling coaches spend hundreds of hours in study and practical application while an indoor cycling instructor (usually a person with a great heart and energy) can have no experience, take 1 day of training, with no test, and be considered certified.
Stage5 Cycling has taken a stand (and a huge investment) to bring indoor cycling to the level of other legitimate health and fitness certifications. However, until health clubs and compliance standards follow our example, very little will change. Regardless, we will continue to deliver the very best in workshops and certification for indoor cycling. We thank all of you who believe in our mission and have taken our workshops. And to the thousands of members who take our classes, we are forever committed to bring you Real Cycling, Real Training and Real Results.

- Exercise Physiology taught to properly target workouts and understand the body’s response to training

What are Stage5 Coaching Workshops?
Why am I required to take Stage5 Cycling coaching workshops and proficiencies? This is a great question. There are many health and fitness organizations out there, each with their own set of standards, so the last thing we want to do is add more paperwork and requirements. However, with the vast differences in training and coaching philosophies, we found it necessary to standardize our practices to ensure our clients receive a consistent message and quality of service. We DO NOT Require Additional Continuing Education Credits. We do not burden our coaches with additional continuing education requirements. Since all of our coaches are required to hold an active USA Cycling Coaching Certification (or international coaching license), we know they are staying up-to-date with the latest research and knowledge. We want to ensure our coaches have solid knowledge and experience in the following: Client Mangement. This ranges from the initial athlete assessment to the development of a training plan to day-to-day communcation and coaching. We want our athletes to have a consistent experience regardless of which coach they are working with.Biomechanics and Bike Fitting. There are many "correct" methods of performing the proper fit for a rider. We have designed a protocol to ensure each athlete’s flexibility, muscle strength, and musculoskeletal discrepancies and injuries are addressed, as well as their riding style, goals and comfort. Fitness Testing. It is very important that a consistent protocol be followed to ensure we are producing consistent test results. We educate our coaches on the various testing methods and options available and provide hands-on training so they are familiar with the medical testing equipment and safety procedures. Approach to Indoor Cycling. Since we have exposure teaching and coaching in many health clubs, it is important that our coaches provide a consistent indoor cycling experience. From the use of cycling-specific concepts to targeted training effects to charts and teaching tools. The Style is All Yours! We rely on the experience and inspiration of our coaches. Almost all of the protocols and methods we have put into place have originated from an idea or concept from our coaching staff. This is what keeps our profession fresh and helps us avoid getting stuck in our ways. We want you to bring your own style of coaching to the table and hope our approach allows you to enjoy your work by having the right tools for the job and reducing the worry over safety and legal issues.
