Frequently Asked Questions
Because Stage5 Cycling’s approach to indoor cycling, workshops and certification is very different than what is found in the industry, we get lots of questions. We love questions and trying to answer them. Below are a few of the most common.
Please feel free to contact us directly if you don’t find what you are looking for or need more clarification. We enjoy working one-on-one and welcome your call or email.
Why does Stage5 Cycling offer their own indoor cycling instructor workshop and certification?
There are 2 main reasons (among others): (1) We discovered a number of gaps in the knowledge taught by existing certifications that do not prepare instructors thoroughly enough to teach an effective class. Historically, indoor cycling instructors were not held to the same testing and educational standards as other health and fitness professionals such as personal trainers. This created a gross imbalance of expertise amongst club staff and trainers. (2) Many indoor cycling classes do not incorporated the techniques, skills and approach to training needed to gain strength and fitness for outdoor riding. Not only does this reduce the effectiveness of the class, but the lack of real cycling concepts does not appeal to outdoor riders and keeps them from participating.
Does attending an indoor cycling instructor workshop make me a certified Stage5 Cycling instructor?
NO. Unlike other indoor cycling instructor certifications, instructors must pass both a written and practical exam to achieve certification (Learn More).
Do I have to attend the workshop to obtain my certification?
NO. The workshop is NOT required but is an excellent way to learn the skills, techniques and training concepts necessary to be an effective instructor. The certification exam is very thorough and requires study and practice. Please don’t make the same mistake a few have made by trying to pass the exam on their current knowledge. Our testing process is equivalent to that of a certified personal trainer.
Do I have to renew my certification or acquire continuing education credits?
YES. Unlike other indoor cycling certifications, our certification is aligned with national accreditation standards (similar to ASCM, ACE, NSCA, NASM, etc.). Instructors are required to renew their certification every 2 years and obtain the required 15 continuing education credits.
What makes Stage5 Cycling’s workshop and certification different from the others?
There are a number of marked differences: (1) Stage5 Cycling teaches and requires anatomy, kinesiology, biomechanics and physiology to prepare instructors to develop sound training and coach proper technique and mechanics. (2) Our workshops and certification are developed by certified USA Cycling coaches, biomechanists, exercise physiologists and medical and athletic professionals to ensure every concept, movement and aspect of training is sound from both a fitness and cycling perspective. (3) Instructors are taught and required to practice presentation skills during the workshop. (4) Stage5 Cycling trains instructors how to “coach” their riders and not just teach a class or a series of drills. Each workout/class is a solid focused training experience with specific purpose and desired result. (5) We have the most comprehensive testing requirements in the industry to ensure we are developing the very best instructors.
What makes a Stage5 Cycling indoor class different?
Each class is a focused and challenging indoor cycling workout that incorporates the same training and techniques found when riding outdoors. They are appropriate for both the beginner and elite athlete to build solid, all-around fitness. Classes follow a periodization training approach to ensure the proper workout at the right time of year. A chart of each workout is displayed to allow riders to accurately guage their effort. Stage5 Cycling classes are for everyone but particularly beneficial for those who like to ride outdoors, are preparing for a long ride (century or tour), charity event (PMC, MS, etc.) or competition.
Does the Instructor Workshop provide Continuing Education Credits?
YES. Our indoor cycling instructor workshop provides participants with 1.2 ACE, 12.0 AFAA, 14.0 USAC and 14.0 S5C credits (units). Participants have also successfully received 12-14 credits when submitting this workshop to ACSM, NSCA and NASM.
